Upright Brewing Special Herbs Bottles Debut

Upright-Special-HerbsSick label art coming out of the one and only Portland, Oregon right here. Upright Brewing is dropping a barrel-aged gruit known as Special Herbs this weekend at the brewery in what proves to be one of the wildest (pun intended) beer descriptions I’ve seen in a while.

The base beer, Reggae Junkie Gruit is brewed without hops, harnessing a fascinating mixture of lemongrass, hyssop, Sichuan peppercorns, and bitter and sweet orange peels to create its flavor profile. This was then aged in Old Tom gin casks to pick up more botanical and brett character. The final batch was created using beer from two gin barrels and two wine casks with spent peaches (previously used to make Fantasia) to ratchet up the bacteria and yeast to an appropriately “Upright” level. This comes in at 5.7% ABV with 80 cases produced.

As if that wasn’t quite enough, Barrel-Aged Flora Rustica also recently debuted at the tasting room. This is Upright’s historic style saison brewed with calendula and homegrown yarrow flowers, then aged for one year in wine barrels inoculated with Lactobacillus. 5.5% ABV, 87 cases produced.
